Pink Floyd Live – Pro Shot in Europe (1969-1972)

There´s something extraordinary about early Pink Floyd. Something that words can’t capture, and goes beyond what is known to lowly humans. The repetitive, pounding sounds created by the four band members weave textures that call directly to our animal selves. Sound that are as raw, foreboding, blistering and cruel as they are soothing and balmy. If nature would create music, this would be it.

And what a great way to discover these sounds! It seems that Pink Floyd live were recorded a gazillion more times between 1969 and 1972 than any other period of their career. The irony of which, of course, escapes to no-one, sadly. That is, partly-sadly. At least we have many great documents of this period, the peak of which is Live in Pompeii.

What we have here is a collection of five partially filmed live shows between the said periods, shot in “the 70s way”, that is, by taking the camera straight into the action, and filming every band member just as if you were skulking by them. It is somewhat sad that we do not have wider angles, but what we lack in global vision we get in unadulterated close-ups (isn´t Nick Mason the most underrated drummer ever?).

Some of the settings are impressive, too. Just to minute 18:05 for a amazing rendition of Cymbaline in an actual Abbey!

Enough of presentations. Roll on the sound effects. Enjoy. [go below the video to find the setlist]

Rating: 9/10
Pros: a look deep into the eyes of early Pink Floyd. And, oh boy, does the abyss look back!
Cons: partial set list; every shot is a closeup, missing the wider show
